Ping ok, but applications can't connect to Net
Hi everyone,
I had a power outage in my house and after the power was restored, I couldn't browse the Web using my browser and check email using my email client. I tried doing a "ping google.com" and was able to get the reply no problem. I disabled my firewall (Norton) and tried connecting to the router using my RJ45 LAN cable. But I still can't surf the web. What could be the problem? I'm using a Netgear DG834 Wireless Broadband router and a Dell laptop. My browser is IE7 and email client is Eudora Pro. Thanks in advance for the help! |

Unplug the modem and router. Plug the modem back in and wait a few minutes. Then plug the router in.
Go to start-run and type cmd. next type ipconfig /renew see if this helps. if not, go back to the command line and type ipconfig /all and post the results here. |

Thanks for your quick reply Cjessee.
Since my last post, I have since been able to retrieve just one website - americanexpress.com. All the other websites I've tried are inaccessible. I've tried clearing my cache but to no avail. I still can't access my email using Eudora, but I am able to use Skype. I've done what you instructed, unplugged, plugged in my router, restarted my laptop. Here are my results for >ipconfig /renew (results for ipconfig /all are also below) Windows IP Configuration An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection : Access is denied. Looks like the DNS is pointed to the gateway, which I am not sure that this is normal. Contact your ISP to obtain the IP address of the DNS server that you should be using.
Then, in your TCP/IP properties, select Use the following DNS server addresses and put that IP in, see if that doesn't help with the problem. I would also remove the router from the setup to see if this is causing the problem. Can you plug the computer via cable directly into the modem? Process of elimination works best, I think. |

FWIW, the DNS address normally points to the Default Gateway for a typical SOHO router.
