Second wi fi router
Hi All,
I have just been given a second wireless router. Is there any way I can use this to extend the wifi coverage of my existing wifi LAN? ie the current single router wifi signal doesn't reach the back of the house. So for example, is there a way that the second router could be a repeater?... it would be physically possible to hard wire them together under the house, indeed this would be the best option. Current rig is: "a" computer -> cable internet; "a" -> wi-fi NIC to LAN wi-fi router; other computers share internet through "a" via router-> "a" -> internet (some hard wired into the router some wifi.) Thanks dins |

you can you just have to loginto the router once and disable DHCP. then just wire it to the other router via cat5 cable and you have a second acesspoint. it wont be an actual repeater more like an extender.
the reapeters are specific and have different technologie like picking up the signal and sending it out again.

Really that simple? Any IP issues? Does the second router need a different IP address? What sort of cable? Crossover? normal?
Any other traps for young players? This sounds exactly what I want to do! great Dins |

no the second router shouldnt need an ip adress just make sure the DHCP and ip assignment stuff is turned off.
just a regular cat5 rj45 cable connected from the first wifi router to the second one. ip issues shouldnt arrise as the second wifi router is only doing the well accesspoint type stuff and the ip adresses are distrbuted through the first router.

Connecting two SOHO broadband routers together.
Configure the IP address of the secondary router to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address. Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router. Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router. Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-over cable. Leave the WAN port unconnected!
