running 2 different IPs on 2 computers
I have 2 computers and they are hooked up to cable modem by a Linksys 5 port work group switch. I had a static IP assigned to one, then canceled it. I wanted 2 different IPs so my wife and I could play on same tables at a poker site for fun not real money. After I canceled the static IP, thinking I really didn't need it, I don't. My Ips are different and it works. My IPs start with the numbers 66 now instead of 192. My problem is I don't know how I did this and would like to help a friend do the same thing. We are running Windows XP and he is on DSL with a work group switch. We are both hard wired in on all computers. I am running a cable high speed hook up. Can you tell me how to switch IPs on XP?

network settigs of tcp/ip properties, but if he wants to get out thru the cable router then use the same network as the router, usually 192.168.1.0, unless the router network number is changed to 66.x.x.0

From my experience if you use a router the site will only see the router IP and not seperate for each computers. When I had a static IP on one computer and a random IP on the other, my router still sent out just the one IP. I went to using a switch instead and then the site saw 2 seperate IPs. So I then canceled the static IP and now it picks up 2 seperate IPs for my 2 computers but they are public IPs starting with 66.xxx.xxx My question is by my friend just using a switch how do I get seperate IPs for each computer like I have? |

Some cable isp's will let you dhcp more than one ip address. I have not seen a DSL isp that will give you more than one live adddress unless you pay extra.
What you did in the router was disable the router assigning addresses.

Yes I got rid of my router and only run a work group switch now. I told him to have them assign a static IP and he would have to pay each month (only 5 or 10 bucks) but they didn't really know what he was talking about. |
