What Exactly Does an IP Trace Show?

I've been accused of starting trouble because supposedly my IP was traced to Marina Del Rey. I live in Michigan and don't hide my IP.

I was given a copy of the trace and wondered if there was a way to find out what those numbers are actually saying. I know they are not saying I'm from Marina Del Rey.

I didn't know if it would be appropriate for me to post the trace here or not.

Also I know there are good traces and lousy traces. What is recommended?

It isn't that big of deal, but I do conduct business on line and am working on a few small sites, so I would rather not let this accusations go.

Thank you.

Well, without seeing the trace, there's not much we can tell you. There is no security issue posting a trace result.

Sorry, I have no idea what I am doing. Am I wrong in thinking that Marina Del Rey comes up in many places because of the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority?

This is what was sent to me.

That's not a trace, but rather a WhoIS query. It's showing you who owns that domain name and the assigned IP address.

They also don't know the difference between TRACERT and WHOIS.
