Belkin wireless G Notebook network card
Having read of my problems with Belkin "network" equipment in other threads, you may rmember that I was having trouble with the above.
The management utility would not always load at startup. The box would appear for a second, with the icon in the system tray, and then it would disappear. Clicking on the desktop icon would bring the box up for a second but it would then disappear. After about four restatrs, it would "stick" and work as well as the (as it turned out also) faulty router would allow. Having replaced the router (and incidentally the adaptor for my desktop machine - batting two out of three so far) I decided to reinstall the software for the laptop card as it was displaying the same problems as before I replaced the router. Now it loads successfully. It detects the network. It will not give me access to the internet..... Whatever site a try is "not found" according to netscape or Explorer. I can see no reason for this, as nothing has changed from the previous install. I've looked at all the parameters in Control Panel that I can think of but nothing seems to make any difference. Looking carefully, I see that it still says on the Belkin box "3 easy steps". If only it were true.... mike |

Run this Automated WINSOCK Fix for XP, reboot and test. If that doesn't do it, let's try a full reset.
TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2. For these commands, Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt. Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log If it's still not connecting do this: Start, Run, CMD to open a DOS window and type: IPCONFIG /ALL >C:\RESULT.TXT Open C:\RESULT.TXT with Notepad and copy/paste the entire results here.

I'm using ME, so I suspect that the XP fixes won't work. 8-))
If I try IPCONFIG, I get "IP ConfigurationFatal Error Cannot read IP configuration" The "not founds" in the browsers are coming up very quickly, so I suspect it is a Windows error. I'm not going to be installing any newer OS in this laptop as (a) some of the software is ME specific and (b) it is a 233MHz machine...... Your thoughts would be appreciated. mike |

You're right, with ME you need a different set of procedures.
![]() First off, look in Device Manager and see if the wireless card is there with no errors, which should mean it has drivers installed. If not, that's the first step. If it's there with no errors, then try this Automated WINSOCK Fix all Windows Versions, and see if that helps. IPCONFIG should work on ME, if it doesn't, that indicates a problem with the TCP/IP stack. If all else fails, you can remove all the protocols and clients from Network Neighborhood and reboot and try refreshing them.

Before I saw your ppost, I looked in the device manager and noticed that no TCP/IP protocol was listed. There didn't seem to be any way to reinstall one, so, for the first time ever, I reinstalled Windows. The card was listed fine, with no problems.
After a slight reconfigure, all is well. I'll keep your fix for futrure use. It seems that the reinstall of the Belkin utility somehow deleted the networking protocols. My confidence in their equipment is not very high at present. All is now working as advertised but it has been far from the "three simple steps" that I was promised. Thanks for your help. mike |
