belkin router problems

Hi guys,

I have a Belkin cable modem, NTL cable broadband and using a lap top with xp and a desktop with xp. I have connected the modem and router up no problem. I can get the internet up on the desk top (gateway) PC. I then use a belkin wireless lap top card. I can connect to the network and the signal strength is "excellent". However it says there is limited connection access to resources. Therefore I can not log on to the internet. Some one has advised me that I need to enter the IP address of the router in to the address bar on my lap top. Would this be correct as I am not with my network at the moment. Do you have any other tips for me. It is really fustrating aswe spent 3 hours on it last night.
cheers

tc/ip setting.

thanks for the tip. however I already had that set. the strange thing is that I went in to lan settings on internet exployer via the internet options and selected "automatically detect settings". momentarily I had the internet up and running then suddenly it came up saying I am not connected do I want to work off line? could this be down to a firewall on the host pc? i have disabled all my firewalls on my laptop! asw before the signal strength is good and my belkin wireless utility says I am connected. I am really stuck on this.
If you have any more ideas then please let me know. much appreciated.

I had to disable all firewalls before my system would work. I also have many other problems with my Belkin gear. Not impressed.

With a router, there is no "host PC", and firewall settings on other machines connected through the router will have no effect. Let's try a couple of fixes and see if it helps.

First, try this Automated WINSOCK Fix for XP, reboot and see if you connect.

If that doesn't get it, let's do these commands and reboot and try again.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2.

For these commands, Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

Can you redefine what equipment you have? AFAIK, NTL supplies its own modem. You have a Belkin router?

If it is the Wireless G router, it may be that which is faulty. So far, I have had two out of three faulty components from Belkin. If none of the above work, I recommend that you try a replacement router before spending time working on software settings.
