I need help. read more here...
hi everyone.
I am trying to stay calm.I am a web designer. I also take care of the pc networks one of my customers has. I have travelled 2,5 hours this morning to the location, after having tried to solve the problem over the phone for 5 hrs the previous night. I have been running between 2 floors of pc's for the last 11hrs straight.Everyone else has gone to bed already.. Here is the full story in short: location has a adsl connection, using a modem (usb) connected to pc 1, which has ics set up. colorfull cables connect 3 hubs on 2 floors, and more recently 1 wireless access point (d-link2000ap+). Pc's connected to the network are running WIN XP's mostly service pack 2's (pc1=win xp sp2). 2 laptops have distinguished themselves from the common desktop folk and connect through the d-link. And everyone was happy.I was the IT-wizard who assigned static Ip adressess to everyone. I faced and tamed the evil unco-operative hp3030 mfp. I was always greeted with big warm smiles when I visited. Now everything has chnaged. Apart from someone doing carpentry downstairs, there is not a sould for miles. It was yesterday around the same time as the storm hit, that the enchanted network turned dark cold and isolated. It may have been the storm, or it may have not. but what I know is that the network was fine. Everybody was printing , surfing the net, sharing files etc.. All of a sudden PC1 refuses to share its internet connection. from time to time I can persuade it to share the internet connection with the laptops on the wireless network. But this only when the cable from PC1 is directly connected to wireless access point. If I return it back to the way it was, used to be when everything was fine..., the laptops pick up the network but keep connecting and aqcuiring network address etc.. back and forth. And the cant ping PC1's alter ego, the default gateway anymore either (played by the charming 192.168.0.1 himself). There was hope around 6 hours ago, when I managed to give PC1 some treatment in the form of a command (netsh winsock reset), Ooh yes, I remeber it too well, the nice quiet pc2 in fron of me (192.168.0.112) and the energetic PC3 (192,168.0.202) were both online, and it looked like the clouds were finally lifting. But around the same time as I started to revive PC4 (192.168.0.113) did the nice belgian man working with PC3 9inform me that he was no longer able to go online. and truthfully it has been all down hill since. currently the laptops can get internet access if the cable does not go through any of the hubs but is directly connecting pc1 (ICS) with the w-access point. if cables are connected like back in the good old days, ICS to hub, hub to hub's,pc's wireless access points, and finally wireless acces point to laptops....ahh...now I realize how great it was. it was like the summer of love. everyone connecting with each other, even the laptops with their wep's and network keys, acting as a normal pc on the system. I tell you it was better than being in love. Now I cant ping PC1 from anywhere (unless I sweet talk PC1 and hook him up with the lap tops only like mentioned above. then the laptops can ping normally). can anyone help me or am I to die a virgin in this dammned warehouse in the middle of nowhere. Please respond as soon as you can!! oh yes and also, I did run antivirus (avg free) and tried to rebuil the lan from the beginning assigning new work groupnames, runnig wizards (wiizarrddsss..), setting new static ip's and so on. nothing works. I'd like to reisntall win xp on pc but cant, because noone seems to know where the drivers fro the adsl modem, let alone usernames and passwords are hidden... heeelpp.... Sami |

hi
I tried it all over again. I set up a new network, gave it anew name. I went to tcp/ip properties and chose all automatic settings, but but alternate settings as the static ips and other settings that used to work. Id did this on pc1 (ICS) pc2 and pc3 result - no internet on pc2 or pc 3 pc view my new workgroup - can only see pc1 pc2 view new workgroup, can see pc2 and pc3, but cant access pc3 from pc 2, instead windows told me the contact the administrator for I didnt have acces permission, well I did, I am the admin. but I guess I should have been expeting this.. wait, just tried it again on pc2 and now both pc1 and pc3 are visible, still no acces tough, all 3 pc's share the same automatic settings for ips and dns, so they should be handled by the dhcp on pc1. trying to see all 3 pc's on pc1 (through view workgroup computers), first attempt, workgroup not accessible, how about 2nd...same story.. Ok 14 hours under my belt, going to sleep on the couch and hope I can get a miracle , like a big fire or flood, or maybe a response from someomne who lived through something like this before.. thanks and good night. sami |
