I have a Laptop with a Wireless-G NIC that CAN access the Internet but can NOT access the LAN it's on! Here's a diagram of my setup:
My Laptop can access the internet, but not the other computers on the network which is very strange. As you could probably Guess the settings on the laptop's TCP/IP properties are: Manully configured Laptop TCP/IP settings: IP Address: 192.168.254.103 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Defauly Gateway: 192.168.254.254 (then the 2 DNS servers that you shouldn't need) Here are the results of laptop's PING: PING google.com - Success PING 192.168.254.120 - Hardware Error PING 192.168.254.254 - Hardware Error PING 192.168.254.253 - Hardware Error PING 127.0.0.1 - Success I try to use the Router's setup address and both Time-Out. I can Successfully do all of the above on the other 2 computers (HostIDs .120 and .233) HOWEVER when I try to PING the Laptop from either of those 2 systems I get "Request Timed Out". I try to access the workgroup from the Laptop, and after a long time, nothing shows up! Sorry about the long post, but I am at my Wits ends, just completing my Network+ prep class, and never have I heard of such a thing happening. This setup worked fine a day ago, Today I brought my Laptop as a GPS aid to a contract job, then shut it off, put it and the magnetic GPS device in my bag in 2 seperate areas, but still relatively close.. The rest of my Laptop is fine, and I dont think anything could effect the wireless NIC like that... Where it only HALF works?! Any help is appreciated! Thank you much in advanced! ~Joe Last edited by imfusio2; 02-25-2006 at 12:44 AM. |

Running any firewall will make pings and access to that computer impossible.
You must disable all firewalls on all systems. Then try again and let me know. Quote:

The Wireless router is connected to the Gateway router by means of a uplinked regular Cat5e cable, making a crossover as it should be. You can tell this since I do have access to the internet, thus I have access to the Gateway router.
The routers are set as DHCP servers, but I use my own manual settings on each computer. Strange this situation is... I was wondering if my wireless NIC is half-dead, but if it can access the internet, shouldn't it be able to access the other computers on it's own LAN?!

Unless I do not understand what you want to accomplish.
I assume you just want the wireless router to act as a wireless access point? Turn off DHCP on the wireless router and do not connect the WAN port, use any one of the LAN ports to connect it to your wired router. The fact you get a "Hardware Error" when pinging the other addresses is a bit strange as well. I would expect you would get a response like "Request timed out". Connecting two SOHO broadband routers together.
Configure the IP address of the secondary router to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address. Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router. Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router. Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-over cable. Leave the WAN port unconnected!

All fixed!
Appearently it was all a software issue. I reinstalled Windows XP on the laptop, reinstalled every single thing, bit by bit, and it worked, No idea what caused the change in the OS.. One day it worked.. and next, it didn't! /shrug =/
