VPN Newbie
Greetings all,
I am a VPN newbie and am not a profesional computer expert. By default, I know the most about computers and networking, so I am the default computer expert. I am trying to get two Windows XP Pro SP2 computers to VPN using Microsoft VPN. One is a laptop and the other is a desktop. At our small office, we have a DSL connection with an Actiontec 701WG wireless all-in-one. In Windows, I picked the ports to go throught XP's firewall and forwarded the ports on the Actiontec, to the desktop IP address. 1701 UDP 1723 TCP 3379 TCP The DSL service DOES NOT have a static IP for our office, but the IP address has changed twice in about three years of observation, so I am will to try my luck with the address staying the same. We have DHCP set up for IP assignments on the Lan. I am trying to use a laptop, connected to a wireless network to VPN back to my desktop in my other office. When I have tried using Microsoft's Port query to investigate the problem with the VPN not working, I get no machine listening for the ports I have forwarded above. I can ping the IP address of the gateway and it works. I am new at this, so I might be missing something woefully simple. I appreciate any replies and your time in helping me. BRB |

First of all, try out this program that can run as a service and bind your DSL's Dynamic IP to a DNS Name:
http://www.no-ip.com ...and here is the program you'd download from there: From download.com Secondly, here is a website with pretty good directions on setting up a VPN: http://www.onecomputerguy.com/networking/xp_vpn_server.htm Hope this helps at least a little
