How to I connect to large network
I have a network in my home. One computer running xp, and one running win 2k are connected with a cable to a router. I have a laptop running xp connected with a wireless usb adapter. None share files or folder or a printer. Everything works ok and all are happy. Now the computer club in my mobile home park is putting in a wireless network for the whole park. My question is, is there a way to connect my network to the one that the club has or do I have to use a wireless adapter on each computer?
Next question. On the laptop I see the club's network and I have five bars of signal, which is tops. But I can not connect. If I walk up the street aways I can connect. So the setting are right. Do you think that my network signal could is so strong that it is blocking the other? One more question (for now) do you think I should be worry about other people seeing what I do like banking? If so what should I do? Thanks ahead of time. |

If you have one computer with a wireless adapter AND a NIC CARD you can use it as a server to connect the others to the net.
Connect the Wireless to the network and then connect the NIC to the Router via a Crossover NIC Cable. Then enable ICS: http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/ics_xp#3 BMR777

Couple questions
Thanks for the reply. But just to clear up a couple of thing in my old brain can I use my usb adapter to connect to the Parks network? Then use the crossover cable to connect to the wireless router that I now use. I then use a cable from the router to connect my other computer like I now do. Now what about my laptop, can I use a wireless card or adapter to connect to my router? In others words will my router still broadcast a signal as it now does. Sorry if these question sound dumb.

Yes, you can hook it up in the way you said. You use a wireless usb adapter to connect to the park network and hook that same PC's Network Card to the router via a crossover cable. Then enable Internet Connection Sharing on that PC.
Your router will still broadcast the same as it is doing now and all of your computers (except for the one with ICS) will be able to connect to the router via wired or wireless. Hope it helps BMR777

It sure does
Thank you for the help. I have found that I can not connect to the parks network inside my mobile home but I can outside. So I think I will get a Linksys pci card and an outside antenna, one of those with a magnetic base. I say Linksys because my router is a Linksys. That way if I need tech help they can't say it is the other brand's fault.
When I get it working I will post back and let you know how it went. Thanks again!! |
