Cry Internet connection on network
I'm trying to connect my laptop to my computer that is on the internet and all is working fine except for the internet. The network allows me to do all the things it is meant to do but my laptop isn't able to use the existing internet connection through the desktop.

Both are running on XP Pro and the internet connection is dial-up. Can anyone help me out?

try this. right click on the 'my network places' icon and goto properties. right click on the dialup icon that the pc is using to connect to the internet. click on the sharing tab and then check the 'enable internet connection sharing for this connection'

it's early in the morning and my brain isn't working, plus i'm using windows2000 here. so get back to me if this doesn't work.

OS: XP Pro + SP2


Had same prob a few days ago, turned out to be the laptop was setup with a static IP address, had to go into network settings on laptop to enable Dhcp.
as a quick check try Start -> Run -> cmd -> enter -> then type ipconfig /all -> enter then check to see if Dhcp us enabled if its not then thats your problem.

I've enabled DHCP but the problem still exists and yes i have configured ICS and shared the connection

On each computer, do this:

Start, Run, CMD to open a DOS window and type:

IPCONFIG /ALL >C:\RESULT.TXT

Open C:\RESULT.TXT with Notepad and copy/paste the entire results here.

OK, first step is to do this on the XP host computer.

Start, Run, type: IPV6 UNINSTALL

repost the IPCONFIG /ALL listing from that machine after you reboot.

Well, the client is connecting, so I think we're close. On the client compuer, let's try this Automated WINSOCK Fix for XP first. Reboot and see if you're connected.

If not, do these two, they require SP2.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2.

For these commands, Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reboot and test again.

Try opening a command prompt and pinging each computer from the other one by name and by IP address. That must work before we can proceed. I'm thinking we're looking at a firewall issue here.
