Remote Desktop Connection
I am trying to get the remote desktop connection to work on my LAN network. One computer is XP Pro and one is XP Home. I looked up a lot of things and foudnd out most of how to do this and get it working but I keep stumbling upon the same problem. When I go to remote desktop connection - Add user and I set-up the way I want to locate the usr on the XP Home, I can't change the location to search for the user. The Add user looks like so:
![]() I clicked locations on the select user window. The black spots are the name of my XP Pro Computer. It is the only location though. I need to be able to search in other locations for the username of my XP Home computer. Thanks in advance for any help. Much appreciated. |

It doesn't work the way you're thinking, nor would you want it to.
You can only select user accounts on the local computer (or if you're part of a domain, you can select domain users), but you can't select local user accounts from a nother computer. When someone initiates a remote desktop connection, they are logging on to the remote desktop SERVER, you will use the server's user accounts when you log in over remote desktop, so it's the server's user accounts that you specify as being allowed to connect using remote desktop. Hope that makes sense. |

Yes, you could create a new user on the XP Pro computer to log in to, or you could just use one of the existing users that you have. It is probably a good idea to add a new user if someone other than yourself will be connecting remotely though.
Then, when you connect from another computer, you are using the XP Pro user account to log on. |

Ah! I see .Very good I will go see if it works. Thank you veryt much foryour help. Much appreciated.
Edit: Actually, I have another quick question to ask. Do I create the user in Control Panel>User Accounts> Create new user ? Or is there a different way to. Last edited by Darkfox3393; 02-20-2006 at 11:00 AM. |

Glad to help, hope you get it working with no problems.
There are other applets to create a user, but through the Control Panel app as you specified works just fine. |

Ergh! Problem again. I did what I said and tried to logon to the XP Pro through the account and I got the Error message:
"The client could not connect to the remote computer. Remote computer might not be enabled or the computer might be too busy to accept new connections. It is also possible that network problems are preventing your connection. Please try connecting again later. If the problem continues to occur contact your administrator." And now I am stuck once again. Is it required maybe that I have a password to logon with? Do I have to put the IP adress? And the computer was not busy and i have it enable. Thanks again. Have a read through this to see if it's all set up properly:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/mobility/getstarted/remoteintro.mspx Check firewall settings and everything. You could try using the server's IP address rather than name to connect to see if that helps. The user account that you'll be logging in to doesn't need a password. |

If you've already tried to connect by IP address as well and made sure no firewalls are interfering, then I'm afraid I'm out of suggestions.
Hopefully someone else can help. Good luck. |
