peer to peer within a network?

Hi, I have several computers, XP and win 98SE networked via a single router. Some hardwired to the router, some wifi.

For reasons of geography, ease of use and speed of connection (I hope) I would like to hardwire an XP machine directly to a win98SE with a crossover cable. The XP has two adapters one wi-fi (currently in use to connect to the router) and an ethernet adapter currently disabled.

I would like to enable ethernet adapter and use it to connect to the 98se via cross over.
Can I do it?
How do I do it?
Traps for young players?
Can I expect any real speed difference between hardwired and wi/fi?

This new connection doesn't have to be part fo the rest of the network, it is just so these two computers can exchange files... but if it was part of the wider newtork then no problems either.

cheers

You can wire them together, but the W98 machine won't be on the network or have Internet access. While XP can manage with two network connections, W98 is not so flexible.

There is a SIGNIFICANT difference between the file transfer speed on wireless connections and wired connections.

Thanks for that.

So do I need to set up with different IP subnet stuff or subnet masks?
Does 98SE need a different Network name? Does XP care about this?

All good thanks for the help
