I have a desktop (Asus) and a notebook (IBM) both with XP Pro, on a cable modem and wireless router with built in switch. Asus is ethernet, IBM is wireless. Yesterday, IBM could not see anything in NN, including itself. It could ping Asus by name and IP, and could access Asus shared drives using \\name or IP. Asus could see only itself in NN, could ping IBM by IP and name, but was denied access due to a permission problem. Both could access Internet. Both could print to networked printers (not shared, but wired ethernet).
I tried all the usual fixes - same workgroup, same protocols and services, share permissions, etc. That was yesterday. I gave up and hit the sack. Today, both see each other in NN! Asus still lacks permission to access IBM. IBM can now access Asus shared drives via NN. BUT, IBM sees no network connection in View Network Connections, and it fails all XP networking diagnosis tests! MS Firewall is off on both. How can this be? I went from fully visible wireless network and connections without NN operability, to NN operability without a visible network!

Resolved
While trying to resolve two other problems (Windows Installer and WMI), I made sure that all the following services were started:
COM+ Event System Remote Access Auto Connection Manager Remote Access Connection Manager Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator Remote Registry Server Windows Management Instrumentation Windows Management Instrumentation Driver Extensions WMI Performance Adapter Workstation Remote Registry was disabled, and fixing that brought View Network Connections back to life while maintaining Network Neighborhood access.
