Get a wireless router and connect it to the modem via Ethernet. Hopefully your PC has a Ethernet port, if not, usually you can buy a PCI Ethernet card for between $5-$15.
Your upstairs machine will need a wireless client card. You might consider a USB wireless client device, but do not purchase a USB wireless key, as they do not have good antennas. Then you need to worry about using 2.4 GHz cordless phones in the house! JamesO |

Range is dependant on a lot of factors. Many advertise 300 or more feet range. This may be possible. However, if you are seperated by 1 or 2 floors, do not expect this kind of range.
If your laptop is wireless enabled this is a good thing, however, if you have the Intel PRO 2100 or 2200 wireless card in your laptop, watch out. You need to upgrade the driver and possibly use something other than the Windows Wireless Management. As for the 2.4 GHz digital cordless phones, they share some of the same channels as the wireless networking equipment and in some cases when someone uses the wireless phone, it can knock you wireless connection out. If you want to hook up your PS2, you will need a wireless game adapter like this: Wireless Game Adapter Another Wireless Game Adapter Jameso |

What type of broadband do you have? Cable, DSL, or other?
I do not install any software provided by the broadband supplier on machines, it usually causes more problems. As for the current computer conntect via USB, you need to see if this computer currently has a Ethernet connection on it. It looks like a wider telephone connection, usually on the motherboard or a PCI expansion slot card with a single connector and 2 small LED's near the connector. If your PC does not have an Ethernet card, you will need to purchase on and install it. I usually get the PCI cards, vs. the USB, they are usually between $5-$15 if you shop around. One last thing to remember, anytime you change the connection to your broadband modem, you need to power it off for 30 seconds and back on. If you have cable modem service, you probably can connect the router up out of the box without any additional configuration. If you have DSL service, you will need to configure the router for PPPoE and enter the DSL account name and password. JamesO Last edited by JamesO; 11-13-2005 at 07:29 AM. |

well its an asdn modem if that helps. i really know nothing about networking. so i have to plug my modem into a wireless router via usb, then the router to the pc via ethernet cable. my laptop should then be able to wirelessly connect. am i right?

Do you have DSL or ISDN? Please post the make and modem of the modem.
Hopefully your modem has an Ethernet port, as not many router support USB. You want to get away from USB for all networking if possible. JamesO |

Looks like you have DSL and your DSL modem does not support Ethernet.
Who is your DSL provider/local telephone company? You might be able to get a used DSL modem on Ebay with Ethernet for around $20. But you really need to upgrade a lot of stuff on your end. If you ever want to get more than 1 computer on line, a decent DSL modem with Ethernet is something you should consider. You might be able to contact your DSL provider and they may exchange the modem for a unit with Ethernet and/or wireless and Ethernet? JamesO |
