buying a server

we are looking into setting up our small office using a server to run a camp program that everyone can use from their computer. We want to network off of the server with a wireless router and we need to boost the signal from the wireless router so we can access the server from other areas in the camp.
Right now we are networked useing the managers computer as the base and it just isnt getting the job done. Any ideas or advice on what kind of server we should start with , and any operating system we would need, and can we set it up ourselves?

Thanks

My System

Well, if you're comfortable afa hardware is concerned, I'd consider building the machine yourself. My suggestions:

-AMD Athlon64 3000+
-MSI NEO4 Socket 939 Motherboard
-1GB DDR400 (Kingston ValueRAM ... no need for the pricey ECC or others)
-ATI X300se PCI-X Video Card
-NEC 3520a DVD±R/RW
-2 each WD1600JD 160GB SATA Drives (RAID-1 in case one fails)
-A decent case like the Antec SLK1650, but up the power to 400 watt and add a case fan or two

On the wireless side ... How far do you need to extend the signal?

Thumbs Up

I think about 600 ft each direction,I would have to get back to you with the type of router we already have.

what software would we need to install on the server? There will be probally 8 computers all together .

Thanks

Well, MS Windows 2003 SBE should do all that you need. You'll have to make sure you have enough client licenses (1 per connected pc) to cover your needs.

For the wirless extension - let's put this in the Networking section.
