USB Connection to Router
My neighbour has a Dell pc, running under XP-SP1, connected to ADSL through a Netopia router. Router is connected to pc by cable using USB port. There is a problem in the link between pc and router.
Signal from ADSL provider comes through ok. IPCONFIG displays 192.168.1.1 as IP address for router and 192.168.1.50 for pc. When I ping the router, there is no reply. We tried different cables and different USB ports. We ran antivirus and AdAware to no avail. The only odd thing is that at one point there was an exclamation mark beside the USB Generic concentrator. We deleted it and Windows reinstalled it. During the installation of the drivers, Windows displayed a warning message indicating that this concentrator could not be validated by Microsoft. The router worked properly up to a week ago. |

Is there a firewall iinstalled here?
With a firewall you have to add the address to the trusted zone other wise the FW blocks it.

I'll check whether my neighbour's router supports Ethernet. Please bear in mind that his current setup worked properly for the past two years until last week.
His pc has two firewalls for some strange reason: Sygate and Norton. I deactivated both of them, rebooted, with no change in the situation. I run Sygate on my own pc. I did not need to specify the router in my application list or elsewhere. I only specified the MAC addresses of the other pc's of my local network in the Advanced Rules section for sharing purposes. Strange, isn't it Last edited by Gswiss; 11-12-2005 at 02:05 AM. |

This sounds like an issue with your friend's firewall, since he is able to receive an IP from the router.
Tell your friend to uninstall one firewall. Having more than one is unnecessary and can cause conflicts between the two firewalls. Make sure the Windows firewall is disabled also. Boot into "Safe Mode with Networking" (restart the computer while tapping F8 repeatedly) and try to ping the router from there. |

I started off by removing Sygate using Advanced Installer and deleting all Sygate entries in the registry, since it's a simpler endeavour than Norton. That did the trick.
Thanks to all for your advice. |
