Do you use this with tape drives, dvds or what?

Networked hard drive might also work. There are just hard drives in a box with usually a USB and Ethernet connection. Cost about $1 per GB these days, you can buy 2 and put them in a RAID configuration really easy. Keep on on site and take the other home!

I just do not know how long you need to retain the backup?

well the thing is, the company is a finacial lender and need to keep the data pretty much for the lifetime of the company. I was thinking of going in the direction of the tape drives, and using veritas or something else for the software.

That you not be too cost effective or wise with hard drives for lifetime storage, maybe you could use the hard drive for short term back up; days or weeks, then transfer to DVD or some other format once a week?
