Dlink Router - Antenna Fell Off (LoL)

yea, havent used it for wireless until today, i have 2xEncore 802.11g network cards, yep, the cheapies!! but i dont know if its the router or the cards, both systems get VERY low signal, 40-50% and therefore get shafted at about 100K/s download speed on my 500K/s line , that is just sad... im thinking this is the router here because well... the antenna FELL OFF :P, i popped it back in but it doesnt seem to be working well, and i dont have another wirelesss network i can test on and no i dont have another wireless router i can use, what do you guys think? try to better fix the router or get a new one?

Are there settings i can play with? should i try all the 1-11 channels?

what is the model # of the router...most routers I have seen the antenas do not " pop " off they unscrew. Take a look and see if there is a part that unscrews...or in your judgement does it look like it should pop off? If you find it unscrews, most of the major router manufacturers make replacement antenas or better yet antennas that are higher gain.

no it popped off, it has a CHEAPLY made male brass connection, all that holds it in are some lil indents in the metal, thats the part the antenna screws into and it popped out and wont stay in anymore, i was lookin at a replacement antenna but i think i might just wait a while and get the linksys WRT54G, or if i see the belkin one on sale i would get that, but they are very expensive. Is there any makeshift antenna i could whip up for now?

EDIT:
oh yeah, it's a DL-514

i live in canada, and the best buys round here are generally at www.ncix.com but i have rigged up a large bent paperclip as an antenna LoL, i get "2 bars" signal according to windows, the wireless software says its 50-53% signal/60-70% link, so... i am in the same room as the router... about 3 feet from it to be exact lol, this is terrible performance, and yes i know its broken but im so close and it does have a makeshift antenna :), i am using the Marvel Libertas 802.11g wireless card with the newest drivers, im only getting about a 1500Kbps download speed at this signal... i have a ~5000kbps dsl connection and that makes me sad, im only hitting downloads of 80-120k/s, thats terrible from my averages of 400's, highs of like 530 (wired of course). Im looking at the linksys WRT54G like i said, also the router has transmit set to 100%. Dunno what else to do (besides getting a new router), i dont have other network cards to test the network, maybe the network cards suck? but i figure even if cheap, it's just receiving, and the send rate on it right now is just fine, same as it was when i'm wired (well internet upload rate, getting my full 500+Kbps). yup, really want this to work :)

well i played with the antenna on the wireless card and turn it in such a way that it lines up perfectly with the router, now im getting 2-4bars from windows and the software says 84-100% signal/86-100% link, why does it fluctuate so much? and so rapidly, windows is going from "Low" to "Very Good" to the occasional "Very Low", i had it lock on 4 bars for a while so i decided to run another speedtest (used http://speedtest.norcomcable.ca/ as it's like a few hours drive from my location) and i only gained about ~100 kbps... why? it says it is an 11mbps connection, that should be getting my my full speeds :(
