WinME Laptop & XP Desktop Network (Dlink)

Hello,
I used to have my XP Pc connected to my WinME laptop through a Dlink DI-604 router and SBCs Speedstream5100 modem...and it worked great.

I have moved now and no longer use SBC. The ISP provided me with a USB modem (its ISDN or ADSL or something like that)

I came to connect the laptop and desktop but have not been able to get the PC to see the laptop or vice versa.

Can I use the DLINK router as a basic Network hub? Or do I need an internet connection going into it?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

If you turn off the DHCP server in the router and use just the LAN ports, it'll act just like a $10 switch.

With only two machines, all you should need is a CAT5 crossover cable. Note that is not a standard CAT5 patch cable, perhaps that's the problem?
