connection problem at school

Daughter has laptop that will not connect to internet at college but will when she returns home. The home connection is DSL wirelss. College connection is via a jack. Roommates connection is fine. When my daughter connects to her jack, still does not work. Her connection worked initially but no longer does. Dell Inspiron 1150, Windows XP professional. Could this be a virus that changes IP address and how do we correct aside from calling Dell support and talking to tech support for an hour?

Right Click on My Network Places and select Properties

See if the Local Area Connection is disabled.

local area connection is enabled. but does say network cable unplugged. with small red x. any ideas?

Have her use the roommates cable and connection to connect her machine up for a test, maybe she has a bad cable or the jack in the room that she uses is bad??

Also make sure she is not using a phone cord to connect up the Ethernet connection. If she is not really computer savy she may have missed something?

do you have just a broadband modem at home or do you have a router also at home ?

What is probably happening is that the notebook is not releasing your home networks isp and dns ip addresses. All she will need to do is open a comand prompt by typing cmd in the run box and then click ok, then type ipconfig /release wait for the schools network to say released then type ipconfig /renew enter then type ipconfig /all enter to verify ip has changed or you can plug in static ip address and dns ip in the tcp / ip properties of your nic.
you could get a static ip from the schools network admin, copy the friends changing the last octet only to something between 2 - 254 , you may hit one that is being used and will gey a message stating that. The dns ip copy w/o changing.

The other issue if you have DSL at home the DSL PPP software may be causing problems. You may need to make sure the DSL software is not running and you may even need to delete it??

Start, Run, type cmd, type ipconfig /all and see if the IP address is either 169.xxx.xxx.xxx (which is not good) or there is a reference to a ethernet adapter with PPP (which is not good in this situation).
