how to connect laptop to desktop?

hi, I have a new laptop thats wirless and I can get the internet. (Belkin G wireless router, windows xp on the desktop and laptop, cable connection (comcast)) I can't get the network set up right and I want to start an on-line class with Photoshop Elements 3.0. I need to download from them and they say I need an E-Mail address.The laptop E-Mail dosen't work so I want to send it to my desktop and then to the laptop. I unplugged the cable from the desktop to the router and then plugged it into the laptop but got no results. This plug looks like a phone line but it's just a tad larger. Any ideas ? Thanks Rick

Can't say why your email doesn't work on your laptop. Probably needs to be configured (another topic).
