Network cable unplugged???

HI
I have 3 PC back home which I want to network, All have XP installed.
I am using a HUB to connect them.

I have put Straight through cable from each machine to HUB.

but still the it says that Network Cable Unplugged.(dont understand y)

I can connect any two machines using Cross-Over Cable, but it doesnt work when I use HUB, Straight through Cable

The IP address that I have used are
192.168.0.1
192.168.0.2
192.168.0.3

Any pointers how and where I should start resolving it.

If all of them are telling you the cable is unplugged, I'd start suspecting the hub is defective.

my first question, is how many lights, if any, are lit up on the hub?

johnwill is right, if they work with a crossover, you know your network cards are ok...

now, unless ALL of your straight-through cables are bad, it's the hub.

try connecting a machine using each your cables, one at a time, in each port of the hub.

first just ensure that power is getting to the hub by looking for a power led, and possibly link/activity leds that may be light. if the front is completely dark, check your power source.

I am not sure but I dont think there is a problem with straight-through cable as it was me who attached connectors to both cables, so if cross-over has been pinned correctly so I thnk the straight-over should also work fine.
Anyways
None of the lights went ON in the HUB or in the PC(network card) when I connect any of three cables.
Is there a way to check the HUB if it is working??

doesn't the hub have a power light?

it really sounds like a dead hub.

return the hub and get a new one, it definitely seems like a defective hub.

Hi All
I got the Hub checked it is working fine.

Now as per me there can be 2 problems
1) There is some compatibility issue between the Hub and probably all the 3 network cards that I have.

2) The wire has some problem.
But I have re-done the wiring combinations 3 times(T568A and T568B) but none worked.(I think the wire combinations are correct)
and it was the same wire that worked when I made a cross-over cable

Is there a way to get the wire checked.

ok, look at your straight through cables, and list the color sequence from both ends.

you need an A to A, or a B to B.

B is the newer pattern.

crossover would be an A to B.

also, do you have strong hands?

i know that sounds funny, but i found i was crimping them too hard, and driving the connectors into the plastic so far that they couldn't connect.

so, i turned around and made a new set of cables, only "sorta" squeezing the crimpers, and all of them worked perfect.

if you watch really close, inside the plug, there is a spear on each contact, you can see that you only have to lightly squeeze to get these to fully seat into the wire.

yes, they sell a network tester, with one end having a dummy connector, and the other end having a scanner.

it's about 60$.

it can tell you about shorts, incorrect wirings, and some can even tell you a cable has kinks in it.

got the defect, it was the Crimper Tool that was defective
actually the spears were not going in the wire(so it was a wire with dead connectors), A different Crimper Tool did the trick.

your pointer to check the spears worked.
