Question Networkin 2 computers w/multi OS

hi
i am unable to network my 2 computers.
Compter A: is a eMachine t6410 XP Home, AMD Anthlon 64 Processor. 2.19 Ghz, 512 MB of RAM.
Computer B: HP Pavillion w/Windows Millenium. AMD Celeron 1ghz processor with 125 mb of ram.

I am trying to network these two with a RJ-45 crossover cable but have had no success. I ran ''Network setup'' on my ICS (computer A XP) & on my Comp. (B (ME). But when i completed it, it said to run Network Setup Wizard on my other computer from the XP CD. My computer did not come with it and does not have a floppy, so i ran the one that came with my Windows ME computer. Maybe thats the issue?.. both are set for default workground 'MSHOME' and checked off file/printer settings to be enabled.

Problem: When i try to access my network/view my network on my XP(A), i get the message:
''MShome is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the adminstrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
-This list of servers for this workgroup is not currecntly avialable.''

And when i try to access my network on my (B). It only shows my (B) on the network workgroup list and not my (A). so anyone please help??

It sounds like computer A is set to a domain and not workgroup. Go to control panel, system properties, computer name tab and click the change button. Make sure mshome is in workgroup and NOT domain.

Actually, it sounds like the XP firewall is blocking your requests, have you disabled the firewall? For the ME machine, make sure the TCP/IP properties are set to obtain an IP and DNS address automatically. The ICS setup should have configured the Ethernet port on the XP machine.

Grin Sucess!

the problem was that my firewalls were not letting me..the one on Win ME (zone alarm) and on XP (Windows firewall, Norton, Mcafee). Also on a crossover, computers are not assigned automatic IP's because of no switch or sumtin. so needed 2 be set manually. Somehow i got it tho, and thats what matters. thanks for the help peeps (& c|net forums)

yep, firewalls it is. hmmmm....now if you want to network both of them and see each others files, then you will need to configure the firewall and add each comp's ip address through subnetting.

i have zonealarm and in the firewall section, click on add and choose subnet. good luck

I think you need to run a proxy server on the one that is connected to the internet to browse on both computers like that over a crossover cable. That's how I usually do it.

The proxy program I usually use is Proxy+
