Are you connecting wired or wireless? What are the symptoms? If you have a wired computer, start with that one first, easier to get it going.

Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.
PING each computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. You can obtain the IP address of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and typing IPCONFIG. This should work for any Windows version. All computers should be in the same workgroup for computer browsing to function properly. File & Print Sharing has to be enabled on any computer you wish to share files or printers from. You also need to actually share the resource in question from My Computer, right click on the drive/printer/folder, and select sharing. If you encounter difficulties accessing computers that are visible in Network Neighborhood, make sure the computer being accessed has an account with the same name/password as the system connecting to it uses to login. While the default NetBIOS setting is correct for normal network configurations, it's possible for it to be altered, and it costs nothing to make sure it's correct. NETBIOS over TCP/IP must be enabled for normal network browsing.

i am now also able to share the printer which is connected to the main computer
but unable to access the main computer from the wireless one. could this be that i must unable the WEP encryption option so that it will be able to authinticate this computer? I'm confused out how i can print from the wirless computer though? hhmmmm? |

If you're printing through the system, my guess is you have permissions issues on the file shares. You never specified, what is the O/S on each machine? XP-Home, Xp-Pro, 2K-Pro, W98, ME? What is the EXACT error you get when attempting to connect, and what do you see in Network Places?

sorry its xp-pro with sp2 on both. i set the files to share the same way on both computers but only the main computer can see the files of the other. from the secondary computer i can see the other computer under the workgroup but not in my network places. when i try to access the other computer to view shared files it tells my permission is denied, that i do not have the privlages.

Permission denied is usually a firewall issue or the lack of a user account with the same name/password as is used to logon to the connecting machine.

i tried creating a user account on secondary computer with same name/password with no luck. The firewall settings are the same on both computers so it seems like it would block in both directions. The only difference i have found between the computers is that main computer under properties of the connection , the TAB "authentication" enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network is selected because it is wired.
Secondary computer does not because WEP must be enabled and i dont know how to set up the keys for it. I much appreciate all your help!!!

Yes i have set up some to be shared from each computer and the main computer can access files from both computers but the wireless computer has only been able to print. Which my printer is hooked directly into the main computer. Thats why i dont understand why files arent sharing if the printer is able to be shared.
I have not had a chance to set up the WEP encryption yet so that the "AUTHINTICATION" can be enabled yet though. I'm hoping to have time this weekend to do that so that i will know if that is a reason for it not accessing the shared files. I will let you know the outcome of that though. and again i appreciate your time and knowledge! |

Did you follow the network config tips I posted? If so, where did you experience your first problem?
