Verizon DSL Network Connection Problem

Hello. I recently subscribed to Verizon DSL service. I received the activation date, which has already passed, as well as the installation kit. I have already obtained a router (because I want to share the internet connection between two computers). My better computer, made by HP with Windows XP, installs the software and periodically obtains a signal. However, web pages load extremely slow and the internet signal usually disconnects after a few minutes. Oddly, online gaming works once in a while at high speeds once I can connect to a server. However, web pages rarely load.

On the other hand, my older computer (which is named AMD Athalon) seems to pick the signal up fine. This could be due to the networking card, but I am not quite sure why my older computer would have anything that my newer computer doesn't. Could you tell me how to determine my network card?

I called Verizon 3 times and they told me several things:

1. My modem was infected, so they sent me a new one, soon to come.
2. They couldn't help me on my new computer because control+alt+delete does not work, and they need that screen in order to process my computer. If you know of a way I can view my processes without pressing ctrl alt delete, please tell me.

If you need more information please tell me. I really want to use my connection on the better computer so I can access more functions. Thank you.

If Ctrl-Alt-Del doesn't bring up the task manager, my guess is you need to clean your computer. I suspect you have a virus/malware infection. You've pretty much proven it's not connected to the DSL account or the DSL modem by the fact that the other machine works.

Thank you John,

I am guessing I have a virus, but would that really prevent my DSL service from working?

A virus can indeed prevent almost anything from working properly! Until you clean any virus/malware/spyware off the computer, it'll be very difficult to effectively troubleshoot any networking issues.

don't really know much about this area but alot of times when my computers get different speeds on wireless one of them is connected to an unprotected router. I'm sure that's not the case but just it into the ring jes'in case.
