Need VPN Setup Help

I run trying to run a VPN server on Windows 2003. I have allowed port 1743 through the company firewall for PPTP. So there is nothing blocking the port. (Server does not have a firewall enabled)

I have also allowed access to login through VPN on account profiles. When I try to connect to the VPN it says "Connecting to vpn.theserver.com". It then says "Verifying Username and Password..." It hangs there for a minute and comes back saying "Error 721, The Remote Computer did not responed".

If I stop the VPN server service I never get "Verifying User..." It just never connects. So this tells me its making it through the firewall. Has anyone had a problem like this and know of to fix it?

Here are the screen shots of what I am getting:

Thanks.

Me, too.

I am seeing the exact same problem running Win2K Server. Some notes:

- I'm assuming you mistyped "1743", and really opened port 1723.

- I have had the exact same setup running for years under NT4,SP6 RRAS, and my users had no problems connecting. We just moved our office and I took that opportunity to move to a Win2K AD domain, but I setup RRAS the same way.

- Now what I see is that Win2K PPTP clients connect fine, as before, but some WinXp clients have problems.

- Not ALL Xp clients have problems. I can connect from my house using either an Xp or a 2K client with no problem.

- One of my users can connect using Win2K with no problem from her house anytime. HOWEVER, she seems only to be able to connect with an Xp client before 9AM. After that she gets the 721 error on the Xp client (but the 2K still works). This makes me suspect the problem may involve network traffic, either inside or outside the firewall.

I am using a Cicso 1700 router connected to a BellSouth (full) T1. I have tried both a MultiTech RF550 VPN and an SMC 2808WBR Barricade firewall and the results are quite consistent. I had used the MultiTech firewall successfully for years at my old office with the NT4 RRAS.

BellSouth manages the Cisco router and they have assured me that it is not blocking the VPN. I think this is true since some users can get through fine.

I have been researching this problem for about a week on thweb and it seems to be an Xp problem. M$ posted registry hacks addressing it (for SP1), but those have had no effect when I've tried them.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
