Cry unable to use network on 2 computers

Hi,
I recently purchased a Toshiba laptop which is running XP and wanted to have internet access on it. Our household already had an internet connection on our PC which is running win ME. As per my internet providers suggestion, I purchased a linksys wireless router model WRT54G. I ran the startup disk for the router on the pc, and went through all the setup steps. I then created a home network through the network wizard on both computers. The problem is that when I have the internet connection through the router the internet works perfect on the laptop, but the entire pc running ME locks up. Not only can i not open a webpage, but as well, no other programs will open, and I get a message saing that Explorer is not responding. I have contacted the router manufacturer and internet service provider and no one can give me any advice. Please Help!!

Thanks so Much!!!!

Tell us more about the Internet ISP, as well as the make/model of the broadband modem.

Does the ME computer work connected directly to the modem?

Hi, thanks for the replies,

First i should point out that i dont know a whole lot about computers, but i know enough to get me by
Im not exactly sure how to go about checking the device manager, could you please tell me how to do that.

I have a high-speed DSL internet connection though Aliant located in Newfoundland, Canada.
The modem is Comtrend CT-301
When the ME computer is directly connected to the modem, it works perfectly, but each time I want to use the internet I have to connect to the internet, as if the computer is idle for a short period of time it drops the internet connection

Sorry if i haven't been able to give enough detail, and I much appreciate your help

Many DSL accounts have an activity monitor and will drop the connection if it's not active for some period of time. Take a look here and see if it helps: http://www.elitecgi.com/keepalive/
