Help on ethernet connection!!!!!

I need help on Home connection. Basically I have a Desktop and a NTL internet connection and I have connected another laptop to mine thru cross-over so that I can access internet on my laptop and share files between each other. Now the problem is I can transfer files from laptop to desktop but not the other way and strangely the internet is not connected to the laptop. I believe that there is no problem with the ethernet since I can share file atleast from laptop.
But I am not sure on why I am not able to access internet from laptop and share files from desktop(the one connected to internet) to laptop.
Can someone help me please or advice me what to do.
Note: Everything was fine till I formatted the Laptop, its only after formatting the laptp I have had problems.

do you have windows firewall on your laptop enabled?

I think keymaker has the answer, turn off the XP firewall on the laptop.

I will def try that. But I disabled them actually. Could there be any other problem.

Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.

PING each computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. You can obtain the IP address of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and typing IPCONFIG. This should work for any Windows version.
