Computers won't play nicely together
So I'm home for the summer and being the resident "computer geek" I have been recruited to fix the network for my dad's work. Now...I am not good at networks. I never pretended to be...but I figured what the hell, I'll give it a shot.
We have four computers on network currently: 5059 Artemis Jim's comp the dell All run windows XP professional edition All computers can access the internet. 5059 can see all computers, and access all shared folders. Artemis can see the dell, the dell can see Artemis. Jim's comp can see 5059. There is a printer attached to 5059 that no one can connect to. Here are things I have tried: -Removing firewalls -Fixing IRPStackSize in registery -reconfiguring network connection...at least 8 or 9 times The computers are all in the same workgroup, I've checked this about three times. Artemis has Symantic firewall and Windows firewall, but both have been turned off. 5059 has windows firewall and Sygate. the dell has Norton Internet Security and windows firewall. Jim's comp has norton utilities and windows firewall. I'm sure I could tell you more about what specific things I have done...but I've been working on it for 5 hours straight and even if your suggestions are things I've done already I'll be happy to listen to them. Also, let me know if you need any other information. FYI: AOL IM name AuroraB86, I'm online most of the time. Thanks for anyone who helps! |

Windows XP can be a bear
There are several things you did not mention that could cause the problems you are seeing. Some include not having permissions to view the other persons computer to having a workgoup login and several others.
First off if you can see everyone elses shared folders (and everyone has there own shared folder) then you are seeing the computer and they are connected to the workgroup, at that point you are just dealing with a rights and permissions issue to see the computer. Here is a general check list that Greenstead was nice enough to put together and is pretty thorough. http://forums.practicallynetworked.c...=&threadid=833 This is a microsoft site to help do a check list of things. Check out the Connecting clients to windows networks section and concentrate on the workgroup sections. It may just be a simple thing you overlooked. http://www.microsoft.com/resources/d...f_omn_wrta.asp
