Internet sharing configured like a mongoose. Really.

And while mongooses are excellent at killing cobras, they just don't quite cut it on, you know, exchanging information through a network of computers.

Now, here's the thing. This is a "game" computer. I use it for games. Somewhere else in the world, more possibly in my house, is a "work" computer used for WORK ! Okay okay and as you might have now guessed, the dear "work" computer is connected to the internet via DSL and is all happy with it's friends computer, exchanging jolly little kilobytes of blissfull information at the expected rather high speed. This computer is also connected to the "game" computer with a fun blue wire and some networking information which is slightly out of reach of my current information but can be easily retrieved if needed. However, the "work" computer and the "game" computer suffer from a bad relationship and thus both think they are the only ones in the small MSHOME network they live in. In spite of that, the "game" computer discovered it could connect to the internet through some strange IP address (which happens to be the "work" computer's, but it seems he didn't bother to say hi.) and a few DNS protocols I understand only slightly, but the main problem is this: On a "game" computer you expect to play games, and some of them on the internet. And while the unknown unfriendly internet connection allows for checking things on the net and writing in forums, it sorts of disconnects randomly and reconnects shortly thereafter. However, in the past, they both had a marvellous relationship based on trust and proper configuration, but all that has been lost due to a well needed formatting of the "game" computer. Yet, in those days, the connection was constant, and the sunny little computer twins were shining in the bottom right task bar of happiness. The fact that they both work under different versions of windows seems to make all things sadder. The "game" computer being the one with more problems which were not solved by psychiatric consultation, was given priority. For future reference though it will be mentioned again, the "work" computer works with XP home.

I am far from being the dumbest man in the world (and the most modest), but I am not necessairly the most well-informed. Expect me to ask few questions. But not none. Just few. And answer many of yours. Easily. Or at least, with more consistence than "My network card ? Gee, I don't know, I've got this blue wire thing."

Thank you for any future help.

I'm sure there's a question in there, but I'm too tired to try to sort it out. Can you post something that resembles a concise description of the problem you're having?

Heh. Sorry. I write too much. With passion. Crazy passion.

Okay. Two computers connected with a blue wire with a misconfigured MSHOME network, so they don't see each other in the network. One of them is connected to the internet with a fully functional DSL connection. No problem here. However, the other one (the one used to post this which is supposed to be used for games, including online ones) can only connect to the internet through the other one, and can because of very simple network configuration that involves adding the connected computer's IP to DNS.
However, that doesn't work very well, and the internet is on, then off, then on, then off. Well, the connection is. Herm.
The fact that both use different OS's (The host uses Win XP Home and client is Win 98 SE) make it complicated, and even with the use of the shared internet disk you can make, nothing good comes out of it.
Basically, I just want a regular internet connection in the client computer (you know, with the friendly little computer twins in the task bar) that goes through the host computer and that works.
And possibly a working local network.

Yes. So, erhm, if you need any information, it shouldn't be too hard for me to get without you giving me a step-by-step walkthrough. So, er, ask what you need to know.

I hope you understand now that there are no silly crazy metaphors. It's a, er, weird habit.

If you have an Ethernet connection to that DSL modem, I STRONGLY suggest you just invest in a broadband router. It eliminates all the crazy crap of ICS, and is loads easier to configure.

If you must use ICS, I suggest unwinding everything and following one of the many Internet guides to ICS, such as this one: http://www.homenethelp.com/ics/index.asp

Yeah, I've thought about the router, the "invest" part is the problem

Still, the ICS has worked before, but I had to format, so it can work again. It only didn't. Yet. So I'l check the page you were talking about, and keep you updated. Thanks.

I have three routers in my closet, they come and go. One is a standard wired model, the other two are 802.11g wireless models. The most I spent for any of them after rebate was $9.95. It's more like skip a ham sandwich than "invest".
