Red Faced Desktop to Laptop via cross over, can't connect to the Internet

Hi

This is the first time that I have tried to connect 2 computers together, my desktop (XP Pro) and my laptop (XP Home). They are connected directly via a cross over cable (CAT . 5E) and after much fiddling and lots of “a cable is unplugged” messages, I am now getting “Status: Connected” on the task bar. The problem is this seems to be the only evidence of a network I can not connect to the internet on the laptop and can’t find a way to share files even though I selected both these options in the “network setup Wizard”. Please help am I being thick?

Thanks HJay

What exactly did you do to get to this point? Network Setup Wizard, Manual ICS Configuration (VIA Network Connections) or Did you Bridge Connections?

This should help me help you

Ok, let's work on this.

Go to control panel, and click on "Network Connections". You should see two adapters there, and one should say "shared".

If this is what you see, continue. If you do not see this, right click and get to "properties" of the network adapter connected to the internet/modem. Select the "Sharing" tab and make sure the "Enable Internet Connection Sharing" checkbox is enabled. Click "Ok". If it all starts to work now, STOP! If not, go on to the next part.

Ok, if you see it say "shared" but it does not work, right click on the adapter that is NOT connected to the net (the one from PC to PC) and select "Disable". Refresh the window by pressing F5. Wait a minute. Right Click on the one you just disabled, and select "Enable". Wait a second and then refresh the window again by pressing F5. If all works, STOP, if not go on.

Ok, last resort for me. Select adapters one at a time, starting w/ the one that isn't shared, and right click and select "Disable". Once both adapters are disabled, right click on the one that you shared, and enable it. Then enable the other one. Let's hope this works...

ICS is a pain - first hand experience!

Confused

In ‘Network Connections’ under ‘Dial-up’ I have 2 adapters ‘SpeedTouch Connection’ which says Connected, Shared, Firewalled. SpeedTouch USB ASDL PPP.

Second adapter is an old narrowband connection.

Under 'LAN or High-Speed Connection' I have 2 adapters ‘Local Area Connection’ which says Connected, Firewalled. SiS 900 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter.

Second adapter ‘1394 Connection’ which says Connected, Firewalled. 1394 Net Adapter

Sorry a bit confused which adapter do you want me use?

Have just done this on the ‘Local Area Connection’ and from the Desktop I can access the files on the laptop that are in the shared folder. My Network Places > View workgroup computers > Laptop > SharedDocs. But it is very slow.

When I try and access documents on the desktop from the laptop I get ‘user does not have access privileges’ when I try and open word files even though I can see the icon. If I try to access pictures I can see a file name but the picture doesn’t show, even with bit maps, when I try to open the files I get ‘no preview available’.

Have just managed to connect to the internet

Yes, ICS is so fickle sometimes. I recommend you just buy a cheap router.

I recommend just a simple wireless or wired router. Go wireless if you want to connect with the laptop anywhere in the house. For this you may need to also buy a wireless card or usb. You do not even need 802.11g as B is usually ok unless you are a serious gamer.

Have a look at these wireless routers, all around $20 USD: Link

Also, to make the laptop wireless: Link

And the desktop can go into the router via a wired straight regular ethernet cable.

All the links are through www.tigerdirect.com - Very Good Merchant - Good Service

Hope it helps
