You have been asked to design the entire cabling system for a medical instrument manufacturer's new central warehouse. The company already has three buildings within two city blocks, and the warehouse will be its fourth building. Currently, the buildings ruin on separate networks, but the company would like to be able to exchange data among them. In addition, the Sales Dept. would like to hold videoconferences with the Research Dept. in the next building. Next door, in the warehouse, 50 shipping and packing personnel will be riding up and down the aisles on forklifts pulling inventory off the shelves on a daily basis. What kind of transmission media would you recommend for each different department of the medical instrument company and why? What type of media would you recommend using to connect the buildings and why?
I understand programming, but this networking is GREEK to me...please help. |

backbone
This seems like a very detailed project. I'm not going to directly answer it right now, but for starters here's something to chew on. The three buildings are currently isolated networks, correct? Is it possible to lay wiring? To connect these networks, you can either do a backbone (T1/Fiber) lines or I believe some wireless can help. The maximum will come with the wired framework connecting the buildings, or the buildings connecting to it. Of course, like I said, this is just a starting point...

I'd consider fiber between the buildings. Copper between the buildings is frequently problematic, even small differences in grounding can play havoc with your network.
Of course, it's probably better if you do your own homework.

Believe me this only a small part of the homework. I wasn't trying to get my homework done for me, I was hoping that someone in the field who has been there before would want to pass on some of their knowledge and steer me in the right direction. I don't have a 3.87 GPA because of having others do my homework, but thanks anyway.
