Asus A7V600-X: only IE connects to the Internet
If I try anything else like a video game that needs to connect to a server, it won't communicate with the Internet. I don't think it's WinXP Pro firewall because it doesn't show it's activated.

Moved your thread because it seems more like a network service/software configuration problem, not a motherboard problem. You should find more help over on the Networking forum.

I'm using the LAN (via cable modem) on my motherboard.
I used Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad Aware. But I was not able to update those within the progam. I don't know if you can download updates directly on the Spybot and Ad-Aware sites though. I'm a little drained. I just fixed the problem with the floppy drive not working. Everything is in working order in my newly built computer. Just that odd thing of not being able to connect other programs to the Internet. If you installed the VIA ethernet adapter driver, is there a way in WinXP Pro somewhere that you can adjust settings for that particular driver? |

What firewall product do you use? Have you checked it's configuration?

AFAIK there is only one place in XP, it is under Settings- Network Connections- Local Area Connection- Properties- Advanced tab- Windows Firewall Settings.
Still monitoring this thread, here's some ideas I had... This rather sounds like a DHCP problem (dynamic host config protocol) , or a problem with the DNS (domain name service) that your DHCP provider is utilizing, that won't let you recognize those other server nodes. If you're not using DHCP --say in a LAN Party-- maybe you need to hardcode IP addresses and nodenames in a Hosts file on your PC, and yours in the others. For debugging, you could also try Telnet or Ping straight to their IP addresses... sorry I don't have the syntax details here on how to try that. I also had another idea, sometimes Windows bases a lot of stuff on the settings configured under IE Properties. I'm thinking of the Security and Privacy tabs. You could play with those, just a thought. -clintfan |

One of the messages I got was “connection refused”.
Anyway, when I click on Network Connections, I see “VIA Compatable Fast Ethernet Adapter”. When I right-click, click on properties and click on Advanced, I see that the box for “Protect my computer...” is not checked. However, if I click on Authentication tab, I see Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication. That one is checked. Would that cause a problem? If I click on “configure” under the VIA Compatable Fast Ethernet Adapter, I see another window that allows me to see which driver I’m using. I just saw that the driver is from 2001. I know I downloaded a driver from the Asus website but I can’t remember whether I had installed it or not. I know there are a couple of files I was waiting to click on. OK, I just un-checked “Allow computer to shut off this device to save power”. I can’t remember exactly how you update a driver again. But I think I’ll try right now. |

OK, I just updated Microsoft WinXP Pro and also updated the driver. If I open up Ad-Aware and click on Update, I still get "error retreiving data" and "cannot connect to server" in Opera web browser. So, when I'm not so tired and hungry, I'll post more details about my settings. I think I saw another one that may be a problem.

When I click on Start, one of the things I see above is “Set Program Access and Defaults”.
I have a choice of: “Microsoft Windows”, “Non-Microsoft” or “Custom”. The “Custom” is checked. Every option in there is set to “use my current...”. Everyone of these is set to “enable access to this program” except the Java one. OK, back to the network connections. I’m going to try to list them all. Local Area Connection Properties (tab) General Connect using: VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter When I click on Configure I see: (tab) General VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter Device type: Network adapters Manufacturer: VIA Technologies, Inc. Location: PCI bus 0, device 18, function 0 Device status: This device is working properly. If you are having problems with this device, click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter. BTW, some of that stuff you mentioned in an earlier post, I could not even understand. I’ll have to do a search for the terms you used. |

OK, I solved the problem.
I called technical support for my ISP and the tech guy asked me to look at the list of programs. Zonealarm was there but from my Win98SE installation. I had chosen "upgrade" and not to over rite my Win98SE. So, in WinXP Pro, I could not access the Internet with other programs. I deleted Zonealarm. Guess now I have to choose one that is more compabible with WinXP. Maybe I'll choose Black Ice. |

Excellent. So it was a firewall interfering with your connections. Good job to call the ISP, those guys deal with this stuff every day.
Btw a guy I respect at work swears by Zonealarm for his personal PC's, and I'm pretty sure they're all on XP, so you probably just want a newer version of Zonealarm. ZoneAlarm Pro 5 says it supports XP. -clintfan Last edited by clintfan; 07-08-2005 at 12:31 AM. |
