Friend's Wireless Network

I used to be able to connect to my friend's network so that we could play LAN games. Now, however, I can not. I get the message saying it's connecting, I enter the password, then the message comes up saying that it is taking longer than normal, then it fails to connect. As I said, I used to be able to, but now I can not. I have a 802.11n Wireless PCI Express Card LAN Adapter. My friend's network is WPA-PSK and the strength is usually either excellent or very good. I can still connect to my network though.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Friend's Wireless Network

Sounds like the friend changed his WPA key. Remove ALL the stored wireless network profiles and verify the correct key with him. Connect and enter the correct key.

Re: Friend's Wireless Network

Thanks john, but that doesn't work. It is the correct pass. I know because: 1. He said and 2. If I enter a different password, it immediately comes up saying "you have not entered the correct password". Thanks anyway!

Re: Friend's Wireless Network

When you connect to that network, let's see this.

Try these simple tests.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

NOTE: For the items below in red surrounded with < >, see comments below for the actual information content, they are value substitutions from the previous IPCONFIG command output! Do NOT type <computer_IP_address> into the command, that won't work. Also, the < and > in the text is to identify the parameters, they are also NOT used in the actual commands.

Do NOT include the <> either, they're just to identify the values for substitution.

IPCONFIG /ALL

PING <computer_IP_address>

PING <default_gateway_address>

PING <dns_servers>

PING 74.125.45.100

PING yahoo.com

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

<computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. (For Vista/Win7, the IPv4 Address)

<default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<dns_servers> - The IP address of the first (or only) address for DNS Servers, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Friend's Wireless Network

Well, I'm guessing that you either have MAC filtering preventing your connection, or you still have the wrong encryption key, in spite of the indications.

Does this machine connect to any other wireless networks? how about a wired connection, does it connect that way?

Re: Friend's Wireless Network

How do I check the mac filtering? And yes, I can connect to my own network. I don't know about wired networks though, and I have no way to test it unless I want to run a really long cord around my house.

Re: Friend's Wireless Network

If MAC filtering is enabled, then it would be enabled from the router. Do you think you could go to his house and then just run an Ethernet line from his router to your computer?

Re: Friend's Wireless Network

Well, the Ethernet would have a different MAC address than the wireless, so that still wouldn't really tell us if the wireless is being blocked by MAC filtering.

Re: Friend's Wireless Network

@Jason: The only way I could wire our connection is if we run a cable outside my door and into his, so that wont work :P

Edit: Or drill a hole in the wall. (We live in a duplex in a part of a complex).
@John: So then how can I disable his mac filtering?

Re: Friend's Wireless Network

You configure MAC filtering on the router's configuration pages.

Re: Friend's Wireless Network

Thanks, I'll try that later. I can't try it now because his computer's broken, but I will try it when he gets it fixed.
