ubuntu + windows network
hmmm?? where to begin.. I know next to nothing about networking, but somehow managed to share folders amongst all the machines in the house.. there are 5. most run XP home/pro wired and wireless, one runs vista home laptop wireless. I would like to add my ubuntu machine to it.. I can see the all but one machine under Ubuntu network but it asks me for a password and I am pretty sure I don't have one. any help is, as always, appreciated..

Re: ubuntu + windows network
yes I have..there is no password on the laptop, and the computer name is correct. I assume that the user that the ubuntu machine is referring to is "scott" not the user of the vista machine, but I have tried both users names..

Re: ubuntu + windows network
Is Samba installed? I would check Ubuntu forums for more detail info, it's a long procedure but it works.

Re: ubuntu + windows network
I did a lot of reading before heading here, it seems, if I understand it correctly, that samba is only for letting windows machines see what is running on the ubunutu machine.. I am not concerned with that aspect of the network, but I will await more info from TSF, and Thanks for your help!

Re: ubuntu + windows network
well I got one machine up on Ubuntu, had to go into Vista and set the share option for those drives. Also the password that worked was the one for the user on the vista machine, but he other machine XP doesnt have a password for the user..

Re: ubuntu + windows network
Just remembered something, from your Vista comp, pls. do this:
Try turning off the password. To disable password protected sharing, do the following: 1.In the Sharing and Discovery section of the Network and Sharing Center window, click the down arrow next to Password protected sharing. 2.Within the Password protected sharing settings, click Turn off password protected sharing, and then click Apply Pls. update.
