Expanding my network

Dear techsupportforum.com,

Who am I?
I'm a 18 year old IT-Student. I'm pretty good with computers, mostly software based, portforwarding still works, but then it gets ugly.
I'm using words like router, hubs, switches etc. Try filtering them as it's probably not the right word for the right peace of hardware.

What's my question?
Recently I've been working on my own project, to have a webbased-backup facility for myself and maybe some close friends. PHP/MYSql etc. are a part of it. Now I 'd need to portforward some ports to be able to let my website hit the net, as I will be hosting it myself. Here's the problem.

Problem?
My parents hate 'portforwarding' and are really afraid of security issues. I think it's kinda bullcrap but I 'm just to nice to do it. So the hell with it.

I'm needing help in dividing the internet connection.

So basicly, 1 internet connection, divided over 2 routers ( 1 non-forwarded for parents) and 1 forwarded for me.

My guess is, somehow split the internet connection after the splitter, creating 2 internet cable ends. -> 2 routers -> happy family.

Hope i clarified myself enough,

Any questions? just ask.

Kind regards

Simolokid.

Re: Expanding my network

Unless you have an ISP that allows multiple public IP addresses (most don't without paying extra), you can't use two independent routers. If you're not allowed to change the configuration of the router, you're kinda' out of luck.

One way to solve this issue yet let them have full security is to put a second router connected to the first one, and let them use the secondary router with no port forwarding. That way they'd be isolated from anything you do on your machine and the primary router's network. Nothing you do there will endanger the other machine(s) on the secondary router.

Damn, that's pretty smart :) Think I'm going to give the 2nd router idea a very big try. Probably after I've finished creating the web app itself and after we change internet provider seeing we'd be out cheaper for about 15 bucks a month for faster internet ;)

[edit] btw, currently there's a network switch infront of the 2 pc's connection. If i change that switch into the second router.. the case would be solved right?
Just one question:

So basicly, instead of 1 connection on router 1 which would go to a pc, i connect router nr. 2 to that port and then connect my parents to the second router with no port forwarding? And they won't have any security issues ? Atleast not forwarded ports?

Thanks in advance :)
