File transfer

Hello I have a problem with transferring files over from one computer to the next. I unfortunately have no idea how to do this. Well besides a shared network but even that is confusing. The problem is that I currently have a hard drive that isn't receiving enough power from my USB slots. The hard drive is loaded with my music and I kinda need to sync my iPhone... lol. So I could really use your help! Whats the best way to connect computers together? My brothers and dads computer both work with the USB. My internet goes through my dads computer using an Ethernet while my brothers does as well. My brothers computer is not connected with mine. I don't know how that last sentence was helpful... but oh well :D. Anyways whats the best way to transfer files from one computer to the next? I'm not looking for a permanent connection just something temporary. I have an Ethernet cable and I also have the USB cable that came with my hard drive for those of you who want to get creative with it lol. I would love to just be able to post the music online and retrieve it through that as well! But I believe its 6 gigabits of music... I don't know a website that hosts that amount of memory plus it can't reduce the quality in any way! Thanks for your help!

Re: File transfer

Since I'm guessing you all connect through the same router for Internet access, this TCP/IP Home Networking and File Sharing Tutorial should get you started.

Re: File transfer

Unfortunately I can't get it to work... I tried everything that came to mind to fix the problem and I followed the instructions exactly...

It just doesn't detect the other computer!

We get our internet connection through cable and it goes into our modem. The internet from the modem goes into our linux router. From that router it goes to all our computers. So now that I think about it I don't get internet straight from my dad but we are all connected through the same router. I'm selecting share this file. Then I go into network places on other computer and I see nothing. I could really use help!

Hello..the link that johnwill provided shd be pretty straight forward. You'll need to confirm the following if they are enabled on all the computers and properly configured:

1.) Workgroup Name shd be all the same for ex: CHEVYFAMILY
2.) Netbios over TCP/IP is enabled
3.) Files and Printer sharing is enabled

A snap shot or ipconfig /all info of all the computers will be needed if it's possible to post them here. There might be some settings that are off, like the Node Type.

Re: File transfer

For each machine, please post this.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

Note that there is a space before the -n or the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the - or / in the following commands.

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: File transfer

Any particular reason you blanked out the information from the NBTSTAT? There is nothing there that will affect your security.

Open a command prompt.

From the Gavin computer type PING Keith.

From the Keith computer type PING Gavin.

Post the results here.

I don't care at all about your last name, the object of the exercise it to know if those values were the same.

Check your Services are Started on all PCs:
  • COM+ Event System (for WZC issues)
  • Computer Browser
  • DHCP Client
  • DNS Client
  • Network Connections
  • Network Location Awareness
  • Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
  • Server
  • TCP/IP Netbios helper
  • Wireless Zero Configuration ( XP wireless configurations only)
  • WLAN AutoConfig ( Vista wireless configurations only)
  • Workstation

Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services.

All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic (or perhaps manual).

If a service is not running, open it's properties and check the dependencies. Check each of the dependencies and see which one is preventing the service from running. Checking the event log is also a good idea here, there may be clues to what is failing.

Hi Charles,

May I ask what's the Workgroup Name in your home network? Also, verify if you have any Norton, McAfee or Zone alarm security software installed, this might be an issue too.

Is Spennewyn the Workgroup Name on all the computers in your home network and no other Workgroup Name? Also, is your BitDefender a Security Suite, try disabling this then see if you'll be able to access each computer and share files?

You've mentioned that you just need a temp connection is it for the purpose of transferring files? Why don't you use a cross over network cable? or get a USB flash drive, they're inexpensive now.
