This may sound like a stupid question but networking isn't something I know much about. I am wanting to set up a VPN as an extra layer of security for my PC and have downloaded and installed Hamachi2. This has created a VPN connection but I was wondering whether there was anything I else I had to do (ie. make it a default connection) to ensure that when i'm browsing the net that i'm using the secure VPN connection.

Actually, I can't see where having a VPN to some remote location is going to help your security. A VPN is simply a method of having a specific point-to-point secure connection, it's not a method of insuring Internet browsing security.
