Router issue?

Yep... I apparently registered just for this.

Ok here's the situation, I have a basic set up of...
1 computer (this W7)
1 laptop (the XP two feet away from me)
1 router
1 wired DSL

DSL hooked is hooked up the way it's suppose to,
then router connected to it and placed comfortably on top,
and finally, the two windows are suppose to share the internet.

The problem is that the XP laptop claims to be "connected" but is not actually connected... meaning no internet.

What's even weirder is that my previous desktop (desktop XP and laptop XP, not much difference) setup worked... flawlessly I might add, so I have absolutely no idea what the problem is.

Anybody have a clue to way's going on here?

- There's no odd modifications added, just DSL > router > two computers.
- ISP: Bellsouth.net
- DSL: Westell
- Router: Netgear

Re: Router issue?

Let's see this from the working and the non-working computers.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Router issue?

You need to enable DHCP on the XP machine.

Select Start > Settings > Network Connections.
  • Double-click the Connection icon of the connection you wish to modify to open the Connection Status window.
  • Click the Properties button to open the Connection Properties window.
  • Click to highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
  • Click the Properties button to open the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window.
  • TCP/IP Properties window, IP Address tab
  • Select Obtain an IP address automatically.
  • Select Obtain DNS server address automatically.
  • Click OK to return to the Local Area Connection Properties window.
  • Click OK to return to the Network Connections window.

Re: Router issue?

That XP machine appears to be connected to the Westell DSL modem/router, those are not the default gateway addresses for a Netgear router. Also, the Vista machine doesn't look like it could connect at all if it's wired to the router, since it has no Default Gateway.

I'd like to expand these diagnostics for each of these machines. Run the following on BOTH machines and post the results here.

Try these simple tests.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

NOTE: For the items below in red surrounded with < >, see comments below for the actual information content, they are value substitutions from the previous IPCONFIG command output! Do NOT type <computer_IP_address> into the command, that won't work. Also, the < and > in the text is to identify the parameters, they are also NOT used in the actual commands.

Do NOT include the <> either, they're just to identify the values for substitution.

IPCONFIG /ALL

PING <computer_IP_address>

PING <default_gateway_address>

PING <dns_servers>

PING 74.125.45.100

PING yahoo.com

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

<computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. (For Vista/Win7, the IPv4 Address)

<default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<dns_servers> - The IP address of the first (or only) address for DNS Servers, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Router issue?

You didn't post all the data I asked for, and you omitted the /ALL on the one IPCONFIG, and didn't post it at all for the other. Last go it appeared they were connected to two different routers.

Re: Router issue?

Enable DHCP on the wired connection for the Vista machine.

Configure DHCP for Windows Vista & Windows 7
  1. Click on the Start menu, and select Control Panel.
  2. Click on Network and Internet. (Skip this step if you do not see this Control Panel item.)
  3. Click on Network and Sharing Center.
  4. Click on Manage network connections.
  5. Right click on Connection you wish to change and choose Properties. If Windows say it needs your permission to continue, click Continue.
  6. Select Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPv4) and click Properties.
  7. Select Obtain an IP address automatically.
  8. Select Obtain DNS server address automatically.
  9. Click OK to close the TCP/IP Properties window.
  10. Click OK to close the Local Area Connection Properties window.
  11. Click Close to close the Network Connections window.
  12. Click Close to close the Control Panel window.
  13. Restart your computer.

Re: Router issue?

At this point, both of them appear connected to the same router, so that's a positive sign. What is the current situation?

Re: Router issue?

Still no internet access.

Is it possible that Window 7 itself is the conflict that keeps any other computer from connecting? I even tried a new DSL modem and that same exact problem occurred.

Re: Router issue?

Expand the diagnostics to include some pings.

*sigh* Bit of a busy weekend, but I'm back with no solutions whatsoever.

and another thing, ur khoa pc is like connecting straight to the internet
coz u r getting the ip 74.248.109.125(ip for United States) , which is not private ip ...

you shud be getting private ip (192.168.x.x)

- Mind telling me how? Obviously I'm not a computer genius... or anything relatively close. :D

could it be your wire connection wrong??
please check and see...

- Most... freaken... definitely... no, not through all of the rewiring me and my father went to attempt to solve it.

r u living anywhere near Georgia in United States?

- Nope.

Re: Router issue?

Boot that XP machine in Safe Mode with Networking and repeat the ping tests.
