Intermittent loss of wireless connection
I have a rather odd problem. I have a D-Link Dir655 wireless modem connected via Ethernet to a Vista x64 desktop, and connected to a Verizon DSL modem. I use the wireless to communicate with my Sony Viao laptop, and use WEP security. This network had been working great for several months, and I had spoken with the Verizon people to make sure the modem and router were set up to properly communicate with each other.
A week ago, the wireless signal started to rhythmically drop out every minute or two, but only when the Ethernet cable is connected between the desktop and the router. When the Ethernet cable is disconnected, the wireless works fine, and the the internet connection never seems to be affected on the desktop (when connected). The strange thing is that this intermittent loss of signal corresponded perfectly with when I added a new laptop to the network. The added computer is a MacBook, and it has the same problem (intermittent loss of signal only when the desktop is plugged into the router). But now, even when the Mac is off, I still have this problem with the Viao. Any ideas? I would greatly appreciate some help. Thanks. |

Need you to ping the default gateway continuously for 10 minutes and post the packet loss percentage if any along with minimum, average, and maximum round trip ping time.
To do a continuous ping: ping 192.168.0.1 -t Press "Ctrl C" to stop after 10 minutes.

I'd reset the router to factory defaults and reconfigure.

I have reset the router, updated its firmware, and shut off everything and restarted. Here is the data I got from the continuous ping:

I suggest connecting one machine directly to the modem and running the following test.
Register at DSLReports and run their Line Quality Tests. It's best to run this test with a direct wired connection to eliminate any wireless issues from the results. It's useful many times to run this test several times, and we'd like to see each of the results. Post the results link from the top of the test display page for each test run here. The link to post is near the top of the page and looks like: If you wish to post this result to a forum, please copy/paste this URL http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2357195 <- sample only, yours will obviously be different! and your IP will be disguised. Copy/paste that link here. Note: You will have to enable PING (ICMP) request response either in your router (if you have one), or in your computer's firewall for direct modem connections. This is very important to get the most important part of the test to run. DSLReports Here's also the Line Quality Tests FAQ to help you understand the results. This will answer some questions about the line quality display.

Hi guys,
I checked to see if there were errors racking up, using the Event Viewer (hope that's right) but found nothing of relevance. No torrent client is running on the computer. I have not yet performed the line quality test, hope to get to that tonight. I did, however, learn one thing. By setting the computer to do Diagnostic Startup from the System Configuration window, which only loads essential services and devices, I now have no problems whatsoever. Should I enable services one-by-one to discover which one is the culprit, or does this give you enough information to diagnose? Thanks! -Eric |

My advice is to use MSCONFIG and disable groups of startup applications and processes until you find the offending one.
