Re: adsl switch

You cant connect two adsl modem/routers to the same adsl line.
You can connect one adsl modem router and use the second router as a wifi repeater to extend your wifi coverage. Is this what you meant?

Re: adsl switch

We need more clarification on what you are trying to do here.

Please describe your setup, and what the goal of the two modems on the same connection is.

Re: adsl switch

Connecting two (or more) SOHO broadband routers together.

Note: The "primary" router can be an actual router, a software gateway like Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing, or a server connection that has the capability to supply more than one IP address using DHCP server capability. No changes are made to the primary "router" configuration.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router(s) to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address, 192.168.0.253 for another router, etc.

Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remaining changes.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router, channels, encryption, etc.

Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-over cable. Leave the WAN port unconnected!

This procedure bypasses the routing function (NAT layer) and configures the router as a switch (or wireless access point for wireless routers).

For reference, here's a link to a Typical example config using a Netgear router

Re: adsl switch

While the setup from John will work, it offers no advantage in performance from a singe ADSL router as it cannot distribute the load over two DSL lines. The only benefit you would gain from this is additional wired ports if you needed them, essentially making the second router a switch.

I would need information as to what your goal here is, and how many phone lines etc are in the building to know if you can get a performance benefit from the two routers.

True, but he's talking about one account.

With one account, you won't have two lines.

I agree that the advice here would be to get a second account for the second line. I am aware that on a single line you cannot connect 2 ADSL routers to the same account.

What we need is more information to really help out here.

More information about what's really needed would be good.

Re: adsl switch

pretty much I have one router which is providing wireless coverage for the building I then have another router which i am going to use as a switch for another one or two computer however the problem is that the first router is something like 120 metres away going through quite a lot of wall which is not a option. I need to somehow get the second router to access the broadband internet and I thought that there might be such a thing as a ADSL switch to allow the two routers to use the same phone line

Re: adsl switch

The original solution posted by Johnwill will do exactly this except that the max distance for a Cat5/6 cable run is 100 meters or 330 feet.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category_6_cable
""Some Cat-6 cables are too large and may be difficult to attach to 8P8C connectors without a special modular piece and are technically not standard compliant. If components of the various cable standards are intermixed, the performance of the signal path will be limited to that of the lowest category. The maximum allowed length of a Cat-6 cable is 100 meters (330 ft) when used for 10/100/1000baseT and 37 meters (120 ft) when used for 10GbaseT. This applies for UTP cables only. Shielded Cat-6 and Cat-7 cables are capable of 10GbaseT up to 100m.""

You will need a repeater somewhere along this run or the more expensive shielded cable to be sure your connection does not experience loss through crosstalk or weak signal strength.

Modem cable??

Please clarify which cable you are referring to as the "modem cable."

There is the phone line that the DSL comes in on, then the CAT5/6 behind the modem.

Re: adsl switch

You can NOT connect more than one ADSL modem to a single phone line. This is a hard-n-fast limitation and is not something you can change!
