Basic Home Setup Desk Top / Laptop

I have two computers that I would like to share the same
Comcast Cable Connection/Modem
and also be able to transfer and share files between the two computers.

share
Dell Dimension XPS T800r 10GB / Win XP Pro SP1 / Firefox
with
Toshiba Satellite A215-S467 147GB / Vista Home Premium / IE7

I'd like to keep the old Dell as my main most computer for primary use.

I need to know what hardware, etc I need for basic setup,,, Switch/Router.
Cables, etc for simplest, no frills, setup.
I am also on a retired, fixed income budget, so need info for most frugal route for my setup.

I do already have an old Link-Max 205 Switch on hand but not sure if this can be used in what I want to do. I have searched the internet and tried the LM 205 and haven't been able to make it work for what I want to do.

Thanks ahead for all info, advice, and other suggestions.
Ie, best hardware for the money and cheapest place to buy it.
