Questions about VPN
One of the things that alludes me is how VPN works. I use LogMeIn on a routine basis and I'm guessing that it's the same idea.
From what I know, VPN creates a circuit that establishes a connection between a local computer with a remote network, as if the two were local to each other. The question I have is what does the local computer connect to exactly? Is it a server / router? How do you get the IP address of the remote network to connect to, or is the VPN set up like a DMZ so that it's visible from the Internet? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. |

Re: Questions about VPN
This is the perfect question for me to answer lol i was thinking about this myself and i have been recently setting up VPN's with Hamachi,Remobo,Wippien,OpenVPN & countless others , just checking which one i like .. i made a model on how VPN works
And you are right ... VPN creates a secured physical circuit that establishes a direct connection between YOU and the other PC so its like a LAN except the other PC is further away from you. So download and upload speeds are supremely fast and everything between you and them is secure & encrypted just like if you two were on a Local network. VPN is similar to FTP , but FTP is unsecured & not directly connected , it uses WAN ( internet ) so anyone who has the password and username can login ... and to edit you would have to DOWNLOAD the file , make changes , and reupload the file for the changes to be seen by everyone else .. The local PC ( you ) creates a LOCKED dedicated connection basically , letting no packets come in or out , like A TUNNEL~!! exactly like a TUNNEL You would get the IP address from the System Administrator or whoever you are trying to connect to , ask them for there IP. On the VPN SERVER side , they would need to create a username & password for you to log in from the client side. |
