Can't browse web but can use skype
Hello folks,
I have searched and searched and have found the above problem many times but not with the same symptoms as mine. I have been trying to fix it and may have made things worse. This is my brother-in-laws computer. He had it at home and I think the browser was hijacked, as he installed some strange toolbar and I searched it, it was malware I think, at that time he got a new computer so we just ignored it really. Then he moved said computer to work, skype worked fine as did email through outlook, so although I had promised to try to get web working, I hadn't managed it. I had installed google chrome, but that didn't work either. At this point, brother-in-law gets new version of office to have word 2007, and gets me to install it, in doing so, it came up with an error about a file not found on the cd (all originals with serials), I search the error, seems common, answer is to uninstall old version first, rather than attempt to update. Of course I didn't realise that this new version doesn't have outlook on it, and so he loses all his files and now outlook express can't get his emails. It can't find the incoming server, or outgoing. So that's were I am now. My mac works fine in his office, we are both plugged directly into wall. I can't seem to ping anything from his computer, but I'm not a tech. Just a pretendy tech. Any advice on steps to take folks? I'm transfering spybot to his computer via skype as we speak, but it's VERY slow. All advice appreciated, thanks. Damian [EDIT] - Forgot to mention, I have started without any startup items - nothing, I have also rebooted in safe mode, again, no connection, only skype. |

Hi and welcome to TSF!
Ran Malwarebytes => http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebyte...=dl&tag=button See if it detects something and fix your issue, if it doesn't you will need to post this to Security Forum.

Re: Can't browse web but can use skype
Hi Grump,
Thanks, I'll try that, I've got to go into brothers office each time to try anything, so I'll get back to you on how it goes. I couldn't run spybot because it couldn't update it's files and therefore wouldn't run. So, direct DLing doesn't work either. Just skype! Thanks again and I'll be in touch within a few days. Regards, Damian |

Re: Can't browse web but can use skype
What is the version of Windows on the computer? I'd suggest trying the proper network stack repair, here they are for XP and Vista/Win7.
TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2/SP3. Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt: In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, each followed by the Enter key: Note: Type only the text in bold for the following commands. Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults, type: netsh int ip reset reset.log Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults, type: netsh winsock reset catalog Reboot the machine. TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Vista or Windows 7. Start, All Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt. In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, each followed by the Enter key: Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log Reboot the machine.

Re: Can't browse web but can use skype
Hi Johnwill and Grump, and anyone else that's reading,
Firstly, thanks for you help. I did install Malwarebytes and it found 160 infection (mostly from this toolbar someone installed called Starware or the like). I couldn't use the latest update as I can't connect to the internet to update it, I didn't see a manual option. I also tried reseting the TCP/IP stack and WINSOCK entries to default without success. I will now post this in the security forum. Thanks again. Best regards, Damian |

Re: Can't browse web but can use skype
Let's see this for the computer.
Try these simple tests. Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt: In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key: NOTE: For the items below in red surrounded with < >, see comments below for the actual information content, they are value substitutions from the previous IPCONFIG command output! Do NOT type <computer_IP_address> into the command, that won't work. Also, the < and > in the text is to identify the parameters, they are also NOT used in the actual commands. Do NOT include the <> either, they're just to identify the values for substitution. IPCONFIG /ALL PING <computer_IP_address> PING <default_gateway_address> PING <dns_servers> PING 74.125.45.100 PING yahoo.com Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard. Paste the results in a message here. <computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. (For Vista/Win7, the IPv4 Address) <default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. <dns_servers> - The IP address of the first (or only) address for DNS Servers, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Can't browse web but can use skype
How about we wait for the security thread to run it's course, then we'll see if we can resolve any networking issue.
