Works on one system not the other

Hello, i am helping a friend with thier network. They have a cable running directly from the DSL router to the PC. They have two systems a laptop and a desktop. And when I plug the cable into the laptop it works fine, but when I plug the cable into the desktop it reconises the cable but does not recieve an IP address it just says "Limited or No Connectivity".

The laptop that does work is a Dell Inspiron 1100 running Windows XP Home w/ Service Pack 3. The desktop is a Dell PowerEdge 400SC running a fresh install of Windows XP Pro. Both systems are using the integrated Network adapters.

I have tryed everything that I can think of and am just at a dead end. So any help you can offer would be greatly appriciated, Thank You.

Re: Works on one system not the other

does the laptop have a fixed IP or dhcp enabled? What happens if you give the desktop a fixed ip address on range of the router?

Re: Works on one system not the other

Neither system has a fixed IP. But if I give one to the Desktop it looks like it is connected, but I try to connect to the internet and it don't work.

if you go to the command line start > run > cmd and type in ipconfig what is the ip you get? If you get an ip starting with 169 then that ip is an address auto generated by the computer

try and go to device manager, disable and re-enable the nic. If that fails uninstall your nic driver, by right clicking the nic driver, uninstall, then go to actions and scan for hardware changes, and it should auto detect the nic
