Dell Dimension finds DSL but fails to connect

Hello,

A McAfee trial period recently expired on my parents' pc, so I uninstalled it and installed AVG Free. Whether by coincedence or not, the internet has failed to work since then. During the program installation, several messages popped up referring to some sort of conflict (I can't remember exactly), but I just clicked "ignore" or "cancel" for all of them.

The pc is connected via Virgin Broadband and a "Scientific Atlanta" router, (also via a Linksys VRT54GS wireless router). The lights on the router show that internet has been found and also the data received count in the properties box is slowly climbing, also the icon at bottom right identifies the connection as "local and internet", but when I start IE, it cannot find any sites.

The ping test via 4.2.2.2 via command prompt works - I get 4 replies, average round trip 38ms.

I have tried re-booting pc and rounter several times, waiting for a while before re-start. I have tried running the ISP setup disc, which bizzarely tells me that there is no ethernet card dtected and closes. There IS an ethernet card, an Intel 82566DC Gigabit Internet Connection, which shows up in Device manager and reports no problems. Just to be sure, I re-installed the driver for it to the PROSet Version from the intel site (recommended for this NIC).

When I test the conncetion through Diagnostics, it tells me that the conncetion test has failed:

This conncetion obtained an IP address from a DHCP server
No WINS server is available for this connection
Ping gateway failed
Ping DHCP failed

Please help!
