Re: xp can't open vista on network

Do you have a third part firewall enabled on your Vista machine?

If so try disabling the firewall and see if that helps.

Hi sangalaki,

This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team.

The first thing you need to do is to create Admin user accounts on both machines and also make sure File Sharing is enabled on both.

Which Norton product and version are you currently using? Please let me know and I can then provide you with the steps needed to properly configure the Norton Network map.

Thanks,
Mike

Hi sangalaki,

You do need to create the same username and password on both machines and give the accounts full permissions. I assume you are using Norton internet Security 2009. Make sure that all of the updates have been applied to Norton Internet Security on both machines by manually running LiveUpdate. If any updates are installed, restart the computer and check again, possibly multiple times, until it informs you that there are no more updates available. Going forward, both the LiveUpdate and the Pulse Updates features are automatic and will run in the background.

You then need to enable the Norton Firewall and make sure that the Windows Firewall is disabled. Follow the instructions in the document below to properly configure the Network Map feature in Norton Internet Security.

Configure Media Sharing in Norton Internet Security 2009

Thanks,
Mike

Hi sangalaki,

Can you please tell me what version of XP and what version of Vista you have installed? Also, what is the exact version of Norton Internet Security that you have installed?

Please follow the instructions below to use the Norton Removal Tool to uninstall Norton Internet Security and then see if you can connect.

1. Click on the following link to download the Norton Removal Tool:

Norton Removal Tool and Instructions

2. After you run the tool, please restart your computer. Then log in to Windows again and run the removal tool again. Restart your computer after it is finished running the second time as well.

Now try to see if you can connect to the shares on both machines.

Thanks,
Mike

Hi sangalaki,

Please try my instructions and remove NIS and then see if your shares are accessible.

We have seen problems associated with using a Home edition and a Professional edition on the same network.

Thanks,
Mike

Re: xp can't open vista on network

Hi Mike

If I uninstall NIS, can I reinstall it again as this software is only for PC? and do I have to uninstall on both PC? I can't see Norton product type "Norton Internet Security 2009" on the Norton removal link, so which one do I have to choose? could you confirm this please thanks

Re: xp can't open vista on network[MOVED]

Hi sangalaki,

Yes, you will be able to reinstall the software and, as long as your subscription is valid, I will provide you with the instructions for the free update to the 2010 version.

I am having you remove Norton Internet Security to see if it is the cause of your inability to setup sharing. I will provide you with step-by-step instructions to reinstall the software after we get past this step.

Please carefully follow the instructions in Post # 8. When you get to the Norton Removal Tool page, select "I have a Norton 2009 Product" and follow the instructions. Make sure you run the tool twice, rebooting in between, on both machines.

Thanks,
Mike

Re: xp can't open vista on network[MOVED]

Hi there Mike,

Sorry to tell you but unfortunately problem has gone worse :-(

I did exactly what you suggested by removing both NIS on both PC but it didn't help

Vista now can't open XP, everytime when I try to open XP, its ask me to enter username and password which wasn't ask me before and said its incorrect. I pressume this ID is from my log in XP ID, correct me if I am wrong?

XP pc it's the same, for the first time asked me to enter username and pass which also says incorrect and when I try to open it 2nd time its come up with error saying that Vista is unaccessible, contact administrator about resources permission, access denied.

I have reinstalled both NIS.

I don't know what else to do but I hope you have another way to fix this.

Thank you for your trouble Mike really appreciate it

Thanks

Hi sangalaki,

Since you are still having issues with accessing the shared files on your network even without Norton Internet Security installed, that is an indication that the problems reside elsewhere. I would contact either your ISP, Microsoft or a local technician who can assist you in resolving the problem.

You need to make sure that basic file sharing works both ways first without Norton installed. After you have this working, you should then install the 2010 version of Norton Internet Security and configure the Network Map, etc.

Once you have resolved the problems on your network, please visit the Norton Update Center at the link below for the free update to Norton Internet Security 2010. You should install the updated version on both of your machines.

Norton Update Center

Thanks,
Mike
