hey guys im having alot of trouble trying to figure out why my internet is not working and my ip address is appearing to be 169. I know why it has been assigned 169 but i dont know how to get fix it. It was working fine until my wireless picked up and connected to another network i've never seen before so i disconnected and connected with my network here at home and to my suprise the deadly 169 ip was assigned. Also just to mention its not my router or modem that is the problem because my brothers have internet just fine. I've been searching left and right trying to find solutions on how to fix this problem so i can get back to my normal life :) so i will list the ways I tried to fix it.
1.reset winsock 2.reboot modem 3. ipconfig/release 4. ipconfig/renew 5.reinstalled the drivers for my linksys 6.setting a static ip 7. tryed a different pci slot hmm.. well that is all i can think of for now but i've been going nuts these past few days trying to figure out why this is happening. I know there is alot of ways this can be fix but I dont know what else to do can anyone help a poor soul :( Microsoft(R) Windows DOS (C)Copyright Microsoft Corp 1990-2001. Re: 169 IP The Kiss of Death?!!
Pretty much identical problem I have thread starting "useless laptop" I too have 169 up on my wireless adaptor after my daughter connected at college, if this thread is sorted I think mine will to. My modem and router are fine also, as everything else can connect.

Re: 169 IP The Kiss of Death?!!
I see you tried setting a static IP which is what I was going to recommend.
Are you trying this using a wired connection, not wireless ? Less to go wrong. Make sure there's no firewalls on, for testing purposes only. |

Re: 169 IP The Kiss of Death?!!
Heh, yeah I see quite a few people with this problem every now and then. @ clyde123 I currently have wireless on the desktop compter. I'm going to soon enough to get a new NIC so that way I can get away from all these problems I have with wireless.

Re: 169 IP The Kiss of Death?!!
Supply the following information please.
OS running on all affected systems Make & models of all equipment (routers, network cards, modems). Wired or wireless? What wireless encryption is in use? (WPA, WPA2, WEP, None) Browsers being used (Firefox, IE, Safari, Opera,...) What security software is installed? (Firewalls, AV, Spyware, Malware,...) Open up a command prompt (Start > run > cmd) Type the following bolded commands and post the results for each affected machine. ipconfig /all ping www.google.com ping 74.125.53.99 Note: To post results of commands, alternate click on the top of the command prompt > edit > select all > alternate click on the top of the command prompt > edit > copy > paste in a message here. If you are on a computer that can't connect to the internet then paste the contents in a text document and save it to a portable media like a flash drive, then use an internet capable machine to post the contents.

Re: 169 IP The Kiss of Death?!!
Cross your fingers. I had to go paddling in Microsoft support pages :P
It seems theres a way of having your windows OS assign a default private Internet address using APIPA: More info here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/220874 Quoted from above source: "You may want to disable it in any of the following cases: - Your network uses routers. - Your network is connected to the Internet without a NAT or proxy server. For Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003, APIPA can be disabled by adding the "IPAutoconfigurationEnabled" DWORD registry entry with a value of 0x0 to the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\<Adapter GUID> " I guess this is worth a try. Backup your registry first and set a system restore point, just in case it all goes pear shaped. |
