Switch to FIOs caused problem

Since late 2001, I've had Verizon DSL. I set up my own network and it worked fine. The network consisted of a Verizon modem, Linksys wireless router, two desktops (1 -XP, 1 WIN 98) hooked up to the router via ethernet cables, and for the past two years a laptop running on Vista hooked up wirelessly. I also have a backup drive connected to the router through an ethernet cable.

For the past year the laptop has been my primary computer but I was able to exchange files with the XP in the basement.

Now last week I converted to FIOS. THe modem is gone, replaced by a Wireless Broadband Router MI424WR. I disconnected the WIN 98 computer because no one uses it anyway. I can get to the internet from both the wired desktop and the unwired laptop. I can get to the Backup drive from both computers (although there is a little lag when I try to get to it from the Laptop). My kids can access the internet from their wireless Macbooks.

But I can't get my wired desktop to show up on my laptop's Network connections.

Allthough I am somewhat computer savy (I am a programmer), I am clueless when it comes to hardware and networking. Verizon was no help. All they cared was that I got on to the internet.

Oh another thing, the wired desktop has an IP address of 192.168.1.4. I know this from a router utility that I can access. The computer shows up on my network, but I cannot access the share files, even through the utility, and I get a message saying "Cannot find 'file://192/168/1/4/'. Make sure the path or Internet address is correct."

The utility also gives me the ability to pink the computer but the desktop fails the test.

If anyone knows how I could correct this, I would be more than grateful!
